On the way back to Lhasa, my friend and I spent an afternoon in the
scenic, ancient Lijiang, listed as a World Heritage site. The un-walled city was
built with a convenient series of waterways (ditches, really) that
provided the town with fresh water. You can tell how to exit from the tiny streets by watching which way the water flows.

Costumed singers made me feel proud that earlier in the week I had actually met and talked with local women who wear these costumes everyday. |
This area had its own written language - a set of picture-type symbols.
