Lijiang February 2015

On the way back to Lhasa, my friend and I spent an afternoon in the scenic, ancient Lijiang, listed as a World Heritage site. The un-walled city was built with a convenient series of waterways (ditches, really) that provided the town with fresh water. You can tell how to exit from the tiny streets by watching which way the water flows.

The three cisterns were used to supply wash water, cooking water, and clean drinking water.

Costumed singers made me feel proud that earlier in the week I had actually met and talked with local women who wear these costumes everyday.
This area had its own written language - a set of picture-type symbols.
